Perro y Arena is a ceramics project and design studio by Tijuana-born artist Socrates Marko Medina.

His work explores a spiritual connection between humans and the Baja Californian fauna. The textures, tones, and forms of the clay resemble the mediterranean landscapes of Baja and the animal figurines transport us to a mystical and mythological world. A place where one is able to dance with coyotes and hares while singing to the moon. Each piece is crafted by hand in his studio in Tijuana, Baja California.

Socrates holds a Bachelors in Architecture with a minor in Art History from Cal Poly Pomona. It was during architecture school where he had his first formal encounter with ceramics which he describes as a very intuitive and nostalgic experience.

After graduating he worked in the design field for several years while continuing to practice ceramics in Los Angeles, CA. Perro y Arena was created in 2018 as a way to share his creations with friends and family. In the summer of 2021, he moved back to his native city, Tijuana to transform his hobby into his full time project. He has participated in various group and solo shows across the US and Mexico, received an award from Premio Nacional de la Cerámica XLV and was an artist in residence at Mingei International Museum for San Diego Design Week in 2022.
